A modern operating system is so large and complex that it still needs fixes and updates, and Tuesday 12 October, Microsoft really patch up Windows and Office. In advance, they have now sent out a record number of security alerts for this month's fixes (patches) - all 16 of them.
Such a fix might be to correct and fix errors, or streamline and optimize functions. But a more pressing problem is often that there are people around the world who are looking for and find weak points that can be exploited to hack into someone else's computer. These "security holes" must be sealed if you do not want your PC trouble.
Since 14 of the 16 fixes are classified as critical and important - and most of these are to plug holes that can be exploited by hackers - is this really a security update that is worth seeing. It applies to all Windows and Office users, whether you have Office on your Mac.

For those with Windows, these fixes will be downloaded and installed automatically unless you turn off this feature. In that case, you can use Windows Update (found in the Start menu) or you can visit www.windowsupdate.com.
